B.J.

B.J.'s registered name is Dual Champion El-Aur Royal Dragon FCh.  He is from the last litter bred, whelped on 5 July 1997, by long time greyhound breeder, published author, and breed historian, Laurel E. Drew, El-Aur BJ & PatrickGreyhounds.

B.J. was our first show dog and what a dog he was!  When he was a puppy, we didn't know anything about showing dogs.  However, even though we didn't know any better, BJ and I went to Fort Worth and competed in the inaugural Greyhound Club of America's Southern Specialty at the tender age of 8.5 months. Even so, he wound up placing 2nd for his class in the Specialty and in regular classes later that day, he placed as Reserve Winners Dog.  Not too bad for novices!  He and I have come a long way since that day in March 1998.

After he matured, inside the ring, he was a force to be reckoned with and he finished his championship with four majors, including a 5-point major at the Colorado Kennel Club show on February 19, 2000.  The judge was Mrs. Dorothy O. Hutchinson.  After Mrs. Hutchinson awarded B.J. Winner's Dog, my dear departed friend, Marti Bradford quipped, "Now get this dog out of the classes so the rest ofMay 2000 - Mt. Ogden KC: Best of Winners & Best in Field us can have a chance!"  I grinned broadly and moved him up to Best of Breed the next day.  How I miss Marti.  His other majors were under judges Nancy King Aiken (coursing & conformation judge), Robert J. Moore and Mrs. Janet Wilcox.

I have to say though, as much a force as he was in the breed ring, he was even better on coursing field.  That is where B.J. really shone!  B.J. finished his AKC lure coursing field championship in style with two, 5-point majors, a 4-point major and 3 minor points!  That was only one of the highlights of a career, which unfortunately was cut short due to injury.

One instance which really stands out in my mind and really shows the versatility of B.J. occurred at the Mount Ogden Kennel Club shows and concurrent lure course in May 1999.  B.J. won the points in the breed ring, going Winners Dog, Best of Winners under judge, Robert J. Moore.  After the breed judging was completed, we hurried over to the coursing field.  B.J. put together two really nice runs to win Best of Breed and he then competed in Best in Field 2001 GCA Specialty Best In Field - Ft. Worth, TX(BIF).  He had a spectacular run in BIF, so much so that the judge approached me and commented, "I've never seen such a big, fast greyhound go so deep in the corners to turn.  He's amazing."  She then presented me with the red, white & blue, BIF ribbon!  There aren't many hounds that have that kind of versatility and, in fact, other than another of my greyhounds, Jib, pulling off the same feat, I've not heard of any others!

Other highpoints of B.J.'s coursing career include winning several of the coursing events held at  the various Greyhound Club of America specialties.  He went Best of Breed, two times, at the Southern Specialty held in Fort Worth.  The last time was in a driving rain storm.  (photo at left)  He also went Best of Breed at the WesternCh Windrock Angel In Disguise Specialty in 1999, giving him three SBIF (Specialty Best in Fields), and numerous other Best in Fields at lure coursing events held from coast to coast.

BJ has sired one litter. In that litter, the sole bitch puppy, Ch Windrock Angel in Disguise, Angel, has a Specialty RWB in 2004 at the National Specialty and won two, 5 point majors at the supported shows that same weekend.  Angel finished her championship at the 2005 Southern Specialty with a 5-point major.
